Hey all new/old MBIS students, on behalf of the school, MBISCAN welcomes back all the old students, and welcomes all the new ones too. Hope you all had a wonderful vacation and are now ready for the rigors of school once again. With new students we also have new teachers. How can we forget the new teachers?? Well you will get to know more about them as you flip through the pages of MBISCAN.
In the past month, our school has had the PYP information evening, MYP information evening, and the DP information evening. There was a Canadian university fair, where Canada’s top 10 universities had come to MBIS to give information about their country and their universities.
After the university fair, there was the Rajasthan food festival in the cafeteria. The chefs had created one of the best Rajasthani meals ever! Everyone seemed to enjoy it.
Moving on, since this is the first edition of the MBISCAN, you are going to see some new things that just might catch your attention. For example, there is a new column called the advice column. Here you can send all your troubles, and someone will try and help you towards solving it. Since this is a new segment, we don’t know how it is going to go so we need your help. Please do remember that if we don’t get the responses we need/want, the Magazine Club will unfortunately have to cancel the idea.
You will know more about all of this as you turn over the pages of this month’s newsletter.

KNOW OUR STAFF |
Mr Albert Ferreira
I was born in Zimbabwe but I travel under a South African Passport. I have been teaching for 30 years. I've taught senior school art, Afrikaans and at primary level as class teacher for grade 4, 5 & 6. I grew up in Zimbabwe. My father was a farmer so I went to boarding school since the age of 6. I plan to stay here for a while. Yes, this is my first time in India, although I have traveled to the Far East, Middle East, Europe and many places in Africa. I love it here; great school, wonderful culture and excellent food. I enjoy adventure sports, horse riding and gym. My hobby is art - I am now into painting. |
My name is Jonathan Simpson. I am new here at MBIS teaching Geography, although I taught for 2 years before. I wanted to teach Geography because of my own Geography teacher – he inspired me to teach. I also love history and politics, as well as listening to music, DJ’ing, going to church, and eating pizza and curry. |

MYP 2 were supposed to write a letter to a girl called Zlata, who lived in Sarajevo, Bosnia, imagining that they were writing to her during times of war. Here is Maahir Khan’s version:
Zlata Filipovic
121 Glucy Street
Strap Avenue
Sarajevo, Bosnia-091
18th August 2008
Dear Zlata
Hi, how are you? I hope no more shells have exploded in Sarajevo and that your family and you are safe.
My name is Maahir, and I study in Mercedes Benz International School, Pune, India. I read extracts of your diary, and I must say that I and extremely impressed by how you and your family are pulling through. I can only imagine how disturbing it would be to see blood and dead bodies. However, let’s just pray and hope this horrible war gets over soon.
Through your diary, I have learnt a bit about you and your hardships. After reading it, I felt upset. You must feel like life is being unfair to you. I thought a lot, and discussed your situation with my mother too. We decided that we will send you this shoe box of things you might like and/or need. I hope you like it.
In the shoe box, I packed about four different things. Oh, but if you count this letter, that’s five different things.
Firstly, I sent a few fruits and meats. In your diary, you spoke about how happy you were when you got to eat some ham and were even happier when you got an orange. Putting those things in mind, I packed the fruits and meats.
Secondly, I packed a few candles. In your diary, you also spoke about how hurt you felt to have to light one of your favourite candles. Thus, I sent you enough so you could light up your house for quite a while.
Furthermore, I also sent you some medication. I sent these because I read about the exploding shells and the shoot-outs, so I thought that (God forbid) if any member of your family gets hurt, you can apply these medicines and cure them.
In addition, I have also packed some recent books and magazines to keep you up-to-date with the outside world. I hope you enjoy them thoroughly.
Last but not least, I am sending you this letter. Keep in mind that my family, friends and I are also praying for the war to get over, and a time when the world is at peace with itself comes again. Speaking of which, check the last page of the magazine I sent you. It has a very interesting article on global warming.
Regards and best wishes
Your friend
Maahir Khan. |

The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC)
On the 27th of September our school took part in the ICC. While people all over the world helped by cleaning up the coasts we helped by cleaning up the river banks. As part of Community and Service different classes set up fundraisers to help raise money for the gloves, water, first aid kits, mosquito repellent, etc. All the fundraisers have been a success.
The river clean-up was a success as always as we found and cleaned up a lot of filth from one of Pune’s rivers.
Even though we try our best we hope that this year the citizens of Pune would cooperate with us and make sure that the garbage doesn’t end up in the river again.

I sometimes dread going to school,
However, if I don’t go, I’d probably be declared a fool.
My favorite class is surely not math,
When I grow up, I would want to be walking a different path.
However, some classes you need to go to, such as geography.
I like it since you get to know more about your planet, unlike biology.
Swimming is a thing I do, which would make it my hobby,
It’s very hard, but because of this my stomach isn’t flobby.
Well, enough about me, more about you
I have absolutely no clue what you do.

Une Visite
Bonjour!
