PYP Field Trips

As a part of their Units of Inquiry ‘Transport and Workplaces’, the children of Prep and PYP 2 visited the Joshi's Museum of Miniature Railways.
Tamsin Atwal (Prep) wrote: “We went to the railway museum. We saw a model of an airport in the museum. We saw other models of trains then we saw the train show. We saw a bullet train, a goods train, sky rail, cable cars and steam engines. I enjoyed it very much."
Puneet Kohli (PYP 2) wrote: “Today we went to the railway museum. We saw a mini airport. There was a show of a 3-D city. Whatever they were discussing that would be moving. Today I learnt that there are different kinds of trains. Some are slow and some are fast. Many people use trains to get to places. We got sweets at the end of the trip."

On the 11th January,

PYP 4 went on a field trip to a Hindu temple, a gurudwara and a church for its Unit of Inquiry ‘Being and Believing’.

The church was St.Thomas Syrian Orthodox church and Father Kuriakose, the priest, was kind enough to show us around the church. There is a beautiful altar, with elaborate decorations and a striking tapestry of the last supper.

Both the gurudwara and the temple are past of Army establishment and they are kept spotlessly clean. Both the priest of the temple and the gurudwara were very welcoming and ready to answer our questions.

A Good Parent

I have many feelings on what qualities a good parent should have. This is one topic that I keep thinking about, usually if I am arguing with my mom. I have also experienced what it is like to be parent through a “Sock Baby” project we did in English.

I think a great example of a good parent would be my mother. In my opinion, she is everything a good parent should be. For example, she is so understanding that if I do something wrong, and she knows I am honestly very sorry, she will forgive me. She will just tell me “Maahir, what you did was wrong. Please learn from your mistake and correct it.” It may not seem very touchy while you are reading it now, but trust me; when you are really experiencing it, your emotions will overload and you won’t be able to help the tears which will come to your eyes.

Some other good qualities that I see in my mother which make her a good parent are that she is funny, thoughtful, fun-loving, caring, sensitive, approachable and full of surprises. Through all these characteristics, I find that she is just a very nice person, a lovely mom and I love her.

A good parent should always be encouraging. For instance, if a child likes a sport like cricket, the parent should constantly focus on that particular physical activity, and give the child every opportunity in that sport. The parent should also keep the child’s interest in that physical activity, and not let other unimportant things get in the way. However, the parent shouldn’t forget academics, as that is not unimportant but every bit as important as sport and in some cases, even more. Most good parents always say, “First, you should always make academics a priority, and then focus on sports.” But overall, in my opinion, both are important and require equal attention.

Some people say; “Big achievements in life are the basis of small steps.” They are absolutely right. Good parents will make sure that they are home when their child comes back from school. They will approach the child and say; “Hi, honey! How was your day at school today?” If the child has problems, they will help solve them, and be happy at the child’s achievements. This support can greatly increase a child’s confidence and trust in their parent.

So it can be seen that to be a good parent, one must be caring, sensitive approachable and thoughtful.  I’ve had a great example in my life and I thank my mother for that.

These are the sunglasses,
Mom wore to go out,
When the sun was extremely bright,
It was so hot I nearly cried,
These were the sunglasses,
That hung from her nose,
Wearing them could even,
Scare her foes.

With them she used to give me,
An annoyed look,
To stop me from playing,
Football in her room.
These are the same ones,
That taught me math
And did her accounts.
She kept them in a pouch,
After checking her fabrics,
And I have kept these sunglasses,
In my cupboard,
A token of Mom’s love.

The ring

This is the ring
From moms collection
Of bling bling
Worn on her ahnd
When we played
In the garden
As she worked
In her office
That has a diamond
In the middle and
Ruby angel wings
This is the ring
That was given by my dad
That I dream about often
And makes me very sad

MYP-1 Poems

Mom’s Lovely Books

These are the books she reads everyday,
In her room on her bed with a pillow under the head.
These are the books that look interesting,
That makes her read every night.
And she spells each word right.
These are the books that she carries on every
  trip that we go
Those make her curious and happy,
It makes her life go snappy.

This is the laptop
That he worked on -
Day and night...
It made his eyes red,
Yet bright
He used it to write
Important E-mails
And check their replies.

This is the laptop
That he used for
Some conferences,
Preparing presentations
He worked at home,
In the car,
And all day at work

This is my father’s laptop
And it reminds me…
Only of him.

Trip to Rajasthan MYP 2,3

MYP 2 and MYP 3 went on an educational tour to Ranthambore, Jaipur and Agra. We had a wonderful time getting closer as a class, visiting exquisite monuments, and learning about the history of these places. In this trip we visited the Taj Mahal, Ranthambore wild life sanctuary, Amber Palace and many other attractions.
Many of us had not seen the Taj Mahal so seeing for the first time was a great experience. We were surprised at the breathtaking beauty of it and enjoyed just observing the Taj Mahal. Another amazing place we visited was Ranthambore wildlife sanctuary. It was thrilling to ride in an open air jeep and look for tigers. Sadly only one of the groups saw tigers but they said that the tigers were magnificent.
Overall the field trip was exciting, interesting and informative. We all made new friendships and renewed old ones we also all learnt many things about our fellow classmates cultures. We will have lifelong memories of the fun we had while on the trip and will always remember the amazing sites that we visited.

MYP1 Field Trip Aurangabad

THE AURANGABAD TRIP

This year, the class of MYP 1 went on a one-week field trip to Aurangabad.  We stayed at Hotel Windsor Castle. Among the monuments we saw were: Bibi-ka-Maqbara, Daulatabad Fort, the Ajanta and Ellora caves, and a few other things. One of the most interesting was the Daulatabad Fort, full of traps and a deep dark labyrinth full of bats!
The Ajanta and Ellora caves were also very beautiful, with all their colourful paintings on Gautam Buddha. Plus, we went shopping for real hand-made Himroo shawls and Paithani saris. Fun for the girls, not for the boys! We also had fun in the many long bus trips we had to make from here to there. We  bought many souvenirs of Aurangabad for back home. I definitely think that this trip was exciting, and hope we see Aurangabad city again!

NIE Spelling Bee

On the morning of January 15th students from all over travelled to Nehru Memorial Hall. Students were looking forward to this day with a nervous excitement. It was the day of the Times NIE Spelling Bee. You could feel the tension and also the buzz in the air. Mercedes-Benz International School has a reason to feel proud of their eight students. Nikhila Phadnis, Maahir Khan, Annalisa Cochrane, Vishal Patel, Kaushal Kulkarni, Nirmala Ramanath, Mitali Banerji, Carin Cochrane, and Mikael Korpela were brought forward to represent MBIS. The hall was crowded with kids from PYP1 to DP2. On an average there were about 1,500 students in all. This overwhelming number of students was divided into three categories: PYP1-MYP1, MYP2-MYP3, and MYP4-DP2.
There were four rounds, each more nerve-wracking than the previous. At the end of the day MBIS had a reason to hold their heads up high. MYP1 student Nikhila went all the way to the final round. Nirmala went up to round three. We interviewed the supervisor responsible for MBIS participants, Mrs. Mistry about the outcome of the Spelling Bee. She said “I felt really proud of all those brave enough to participate. They really showed their enthusiasm for it.” She comments on Nikhila and Nirmala’s exceptional performance. “I felt proud and honoured to be a part of MBIS when their names were read.”

MY Friend

I’ve known Magnus since I was 2 years old. He can’t see at all because he was born blind. When we play football he uses a ball with a bell inside it so he can hear it. Now, Magnus is 13 years old. He plays the drums and I can’t wait to see how good he is.
He plays in my band in Norway. The guitarist in my band is called Jon and the pianist in my band is called Thomas. The drummer is Magnus and you might think that it sounds weird that a blind boy can play the drums, but he can.

“I think I am inquirer.  Because I always ask something to other people so they said that sometimes I am annoying.  Even I already know this, but I ask again and again because I want to check again.  I always want to know something.  If I feel curious about it I ask about it to teacher or friends.  Sometimes I ask stupid things like “over the space are there rainbow?”  So they think I am strange.  But I am happy because it is happy that I we don’t know lots of things.  Then we can learn it and we can feel full of it.
I also think that I am open-minded.  Because I am thinking little bit different with other people.  When we draw sun everybody color it red of orange or yellow.  But sometimes I color it black or blue.  Actually it doesn’t make sense but I think drawing can have difference and the sun doesn’t have to be red or orange.  I also try to think about themselves (other people) and I try to understand them who have problem, I am Christianity, so I try to help people.”
